Materials

100g (260m) Scheepjes stonewashed (sport weight) yarn

3mm and 3.25mm Straight or long circular knitting needles

3mm and 3.25mm DPNS (double pointed needles) (for sleeves)

Stitch markers

Stitch holder or waste yarn

5 small buttons

Yarn needle (for sewing in ends)


Knitting terms

K = knit

P= Purl

M1R = Make one right {Insert the left needle from back to front under the horizontal strand between the stitches (thus lifting it onto the left-hand needle). Knit through the front loop to twist the stitch}

M1L = Make one left {Insert the left needle from front to back under the horizontal strand between the stitches (thus lifting it onto the left-hand needle). Knit through the back loop to twist the stitch}

PM: Place Marker

SM: Slip Marker

SKP= Slip the next stitch, knit the next, pass the slipped stitch over the just knitted stitch

TOG= together

K2TOG= Knit 2 together

P2TOG= Purl 2 together

YRN = Yarn round needle (for buttonholes)


INSTRUCTIONS

Yolk and Body:

Using 3mm straight or long circular needles, cast on 64 stitches

Rib the neckband as follows:

  • Row 1: K3, P2, (K2, P2) to the last 3 stitches, K3

  • Row 2: P3, K2, (P2, K2) to the last 3 stitches, P3

  • Row 3-6: Repeat row 1 and 2 two times more

Using 3.25mm straight or long circular needles,

  • RS: K10, M1R, K1, PM, K1, M1L, K9, M1R, K1, PM, K1, M1L, K18, M1R, K1, PM, K1, M1L, K9, M1R, K1, PM, K1, M1L, K10 (72 stitches)

  • WS: Purl all stitches

  • RS: K11, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K11, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K20, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K11, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K11 (80 stitches)

  • WS: Purl all stitches

  • RS: K12, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K13, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K22, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K13, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K12 (88 stitches)

  • WS: Purl all stitches

  • RS: K13, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K15, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K24, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K15, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K13 (96 stitches)

  • WS: Purl all stitches

Keep increasing 8 stitches (on every RS row) in this way until there are (22, 33, 42, 33, 22) stitches between each stitch marker, ending with a WS row.

  • RS: Knit all stitches

  • WS: Purl all stitches

  • RS: K21, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K31, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K40, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K31, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K21 (160 stitches)

  • WS: Purl all stitches

  • RS: Knit all stitches

  • WS: Purl all stitches

  • RS: K22, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K33, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K42, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K33, M1R, K1, SM, K1, M1L, K22 (168 stitches)

  • WS: Purl all stitches

Divide for body and sleeves.

  • RS: K24, remove marker, slip 37 stitches into a stitch holder or waste yarn, remove marker, cast on 6 stitches, K46, remove marker, slip 37 stitches into a stitch holder or waste yarn, remove marker, cast on 6 stitches, K24 (106 stitches)

  • WS: Purl all stitches

Work 27 rows in stockinette stitch, starting with a RS row and ending in a RS row.

Next row: P26, P2tog, P50, P2tog, P26 (104 stitches)

Using 3mm long or circular knitting needles,

  • Row 1: K3, P2, (K2, P2) to the last 3 stitches, K3

  • Row 2: P3, K2, (P2, K2) to the last 3 stitches, P3

  • Row3-6: Repeat row 1 and 2 two times more

Cast off in rib.

Both Sleeves:

Sleeves are worked in the round.

Transfer 37 sleeve stitches to 3.25mm DPNS.

With RS facing, Pick up and knit 3 stitches from the 6 underarm cast on stitches, pick up and knit one more stitch (in the space between left and right needle, making it a total of 4 picked up stitches), K37, Pick up and knit 4 stitches. Mark the beginning of round. (45 stitches)

Next row: K3, K2tog, K35, SKP, K3 (43 stitches)

Knit 11 rows.

  • Next row: K1, SKP, Knit to the last 3 stitches, K2tog,K1

  • Knit 5 rows without decreasing

Repeat the last 6 rows twice more (37 stitches)

  • Next row: K1, SKP, Knit to the last 3 stitches, K2tog,K1

  • Knit 3 rows without decreasing

Next row: K4, K2tog, K10, K2tog, K10, K2tog, K5 (32 stitches)

Using 3mm DPNS,

  • Row 1-6: K2, P2 till the end of row.

Cast off in rib.

Button band:

With RS facing, using 3mm straight or long circular needles, pick up and knit 58 stitches evenly along the left front edge (top to bottom edge)

  • WS: P2, (K2, P2) till then end of row

  • RS: K2, (P2. K2) till then end of row

Repeat the last 2 rows once more and the WS row once (total of 5 rib rows)

Cast off in Rib.

Buttonhole band:

With RS facing, using 3mm straight or long circular needles, pick up and knit 58 stitches evenly along the left front edge (bottom to top edge)

  • WS: P2, (K2, P2) till then end of row

  • RS: K2, (P2. K2) till then end of row

  • Buttonhole row (WS): Rib 2, {rib2tog, yrn, rib 11} 4 times, rib 2 tog, yrn, Rib 2

  • RS: K2, (P2. K2) till then end of row

  • WS: P2, (K2, P2) till then end of row

Total of 5 rib rows

Cast off in Rib.

Finishing:

Sew in ends and sew buttons in place.

Block gently.
